Auditorio de Tenerife “Adán Martín”
Spain / Tenerife / Santa Cruz
During a recent trip we had the opportunity to do a quick exterior visit the Auditorio de Tenerife, one the most remarkable buildings in Tenerife. The building is located on the avenue of the constitution, right next to the container harbour and near the centre of Tenerifes capital city Santa Cruz.
Depending from which direction you look at this building, you will see a different aspect of this building. Looking from the city is feels like the bow of a ship, from the side it looks like a wave crashing on the shore. (The concrete wave weighs 3500 metric tonnes). And from the sea side it looks like a whale.
The architect of this building is Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. He also designed the Liege-Guillemins Railway station (Belgium), the Science Museum, The City of Arts and Sciences and the Palace of the Arts all in Valencia.
Construction of the auditorium began in 1997 and was completed in 2003. Part of the building was being restored, as you can see it is partly cladded in mosaics that where crumbling in some parts of the building.
